About

Hello reader! I'm a new-ish book blogger and a lifelong story lover. My approach to reviewing books is slightly different from what you might find elsewhere, so below I'll do a quick rundown.

My Approach to Reviewing

By briefly outlining my personal reading tastes, I'm hoping you can quickly decipher whether or not a book I review is one you'll enjoy. I'll of course be including what I feel are objective thoughts in my reviews, but I want to be upfront about the kind of elements I prefer in a book so then YOU can figure out if you want to pick it up. On this page, I will include:

  • favorite elements/tropes/genres
  • a short list of my favorite books

Please peruse at your leisure and see if we have anything in common!

What I Prioritize in Books

1. Characterization

This is #1 for a reason. If I don't care about the characters - if they're one-note or lack depth - I don't care how beautiful the writing is or how intricate the plot is, the book will lose major points. Characters must be fleshed out and elicit some deep emotional response for me to care.

2. Fantasy Genre

I'm a fantasy reader through and through. Give me anything magical, anything supernatural, and you hold the key to my heart. I particularly like reading about vampires, faeries/elves, saints, and shapeshifters.

3. Villains/Antiheroes/Morally Gray Characters

I know some readers find these characters overused, but I'm a sucker for the "tragic-backstory villain." I can never get enough. Not because their past excuses their actions, but because it interests me to see how/if the character will seek redemption and confront their issues. Examples: The Darkling, Warner, Kaz, Khalid

4. Certain Contemporaries

Okay I don't know how to describe this one, except to give examples: Sarah Dessen, Huntley Fitzpatrick, and some of John Green. I gravitate toward stories that have a romance but also heavily concentrate on internal character struggles like grief and revenge, along with darker, and sometimes controversial, topics.

Books I Love

1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
2. Stolen by Lucy Christopher
3. The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare
4. ACOTAR series by Sarah J Maas
5. Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
6. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
7. The Wrath & the Dawn duology by Renee Ahdieh
8. Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden
9. The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
10. An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

Thanks for browsing! Hopefully you find my reviews helpful on your reading journey.

(PS - I'm new at blogging, but not reviewing! More of my older - slightly cringeworthy - reviews can be found on my Goodreads.)
